is implicated. the pentagon says general john allen apparently had inappropriate communication with the woman linked to the scandal. as fox's ainsley earhart reports, the fbi is busy with multiple investigations. >> reporter: fbi agents searching the home of paula broadwell, the woman whose affair with general david petraeus led to his resignation as the cia director. the agents went to her house in charlotte, north carolina on monday night. some of the general's former staff members and friends reportedly shocked that this woman was sending e-mails warning jill kelley to stay away from him. now, john allen is under investigation. defense secretary leon pan eight said he ordered an investigation of general allen on monday. the secretary who is a former cia director also talking about general petraeus' resignation. he says, quote, i think he took the right step and i think it is important when you are director of the cia with all the challenges that fess you in that position that personal integrity comes first and foremost. general petraeus was scheduled to testify about the benghazi attacks.

faces a serious new foreign policy challenge. there's word today from the pentagon that in the closing days of the election campaign iranian jets fired on a u.s. drone. let's get the details from our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, it was last thursday just one week ago we now know two iranian russian made jets very workable flew out into the persian gulf into international air space according to the pentagon and fired at a predator drone, a u.s. air force predator drone that the pentagon says was on a routine surveillance mission. although that mission was classified. here's what the pentagon had to say about it all. >> we believe this is the first time that an unmanned aircraft has been shot at over international waters in the arabian gulf. >> is that an act of war? >> i'm not going to get into legal labels. the reality is that we have a wide range of options as i said before to protect our assets and our forces in the region and will do so when necessary. we have communicated to the iranians that we will continue to conduct surveillance

untoward. there is a second element to all this. the pentagon in disclosing all this this morning that there were 20,000 to 30,000 pages, but again, associates of general allen say that that is printouts that often include multiple copies of the same e-mail. that they did a new printout every time there was a new e-mail in the chain which greatly they say exaggerates the number of e-mails. there is one other element here. general allen was to have a confirmation hearing to be the commander of the u.s. mission to nato. that is on hold now. >> this whole story. there are so many elements. if you tune in a couple hours after the last time, there is a whole new chain. a defense official told nbc news, in general allen eights case, many were between the general's wife and jill kelley. the woman in tampa, the social liaison and he was just copied on them. what do you make of that in. >> that may well be the case that he was copied. they do say that he did send e-mails to her as well. it appears that both general allen and his wife were e-mailing with her. and you have to remember, she i
. >>> a developing story tonight. pentagon officials confirm an iranian jet fired on a u.s. drone. a spokesman says that drone was 16 nautical miles off the iranian coast. it happened last week while they were conducting routine surveillance. the iranian jet reportedly fired twice. the drone was not hit and returned to its base. a pentagon spokesman said that drone was never in iranian air space. president obama was notified about that incident. >>> tonight commander mark kelly said he is done thinking about the man who tried to kill his wife. former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords. they faced jared loughner in court today during an emotional sentencing hearing. as jay gray reports now, loughner will spend the rest of his life in prison. >> reporter: as he arrived at the federal courthouse in tucson, jared loughner knew his sentence life in prison with no chance of parole. what he and the world would learn today is that the pain and emotions from that killing spree in january of 2011 are still raw, and at times overwhelming. >> i'm very, very angry, and sick at heart about what you did, an
